Stone column are formed by inserting a vibratory probe to incorporate granular material into ground and create vertical inclusions with high stiffness, shear strength and free draining characteristic. The compaction uplift for stone is at every 0.3 m to 0.5 m interval. Typically the columns formed are 60 cm to 100 cm in diameter depending on the subsoil stiffness.
This technology is well suited for the improvement of firm and soft soils (i.e., silts, sandy silts, loams and non-homogeneous soils) as well as non-cohesive soils where enhanced properties are needed. Typical load that can be carried by a single column range from 200 kN to 300 kN. Stone column spacing is designed between 1.5 m to 3.0 m with area replacement ratio of 15% to 35%.
