What Nitronic 60 Is

Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800, also called Alloy 218) is an austenitic stainless steel strengthened with nitrogen and alloyed with roughly 4% silicon and 8% manganese. Those additions are what give it its defining trait: exceptional resistance to galling — the tearing and seizing that happens when two loaded metal surfaces slide against each other. Standard 304 and 316 gall badly; Nitronic 60 resists it even when mated against itself and even without lubricant.

It also carries about twice the yield strength of 304 and 316 in the annealed condition, so parts can be made lighter or thinner. Corrosion resistance sits between 304 and 316 overall, but with better chloride pitting, crevice and stress-corrosion-cracking resistance than 316. The design rule of thumb: in a wear system, seizing happens first, wear second, corrosion last — so where parts move under load, galling resistance matters more than a marginal corrosion edge, and that's Nitronic 60's territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nitronic 60 and what makes it special?

Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800, Alloy 218) is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel with high silicon and manganese content. Those additions give it outstanding resistance to galling and wear and about twice the yield strength of 304 and 316, while keeping good corrosion resistance.

What is galling and why does it matter?

Galling is a form of severe wear where two metal surfaces under load stick, tear and seize against each other, common with standard stainless fasteners and valve parts. Nitronic 60 resists galling even when mated against itself and without lubricant, which is why it is used for threads, valve stems and bearing surfaces that would seize in 304 or 316.

How does Nitronic 60 compare to 316 stainless steel?

Nitronic 60 has about twice the yield strength of 316 and far better galling and wear resistance, plus better chloride pitting, crevice and stress-corrosion-cracking resistance. Its general uniform corrosion resistance sits between 304 and 316, so 316 can still be the better choice for pure corrosion service with no wear.

Is Nitronic 60 corrosion resistant and how does it perform at high temperature?

Yes. Nitronic 60 offers corrosion resistance between grades 304 and 316 with superior chloride pitting resistance, and it has high-temperature oxidation resistance similar to grade 309, performing well up to around 980 degrees Celsius.

Does E Steel stock Nitronic 60 in Southeast Asia, and is there a minimum order?

Yes. E Steel is one of the few suppliers holding ready-stock Nitronic 60 plate in Southeast Asia, cut to size from its warehouse in Malaysia with no minimum order quantity and a mill certificate supplied with every order.
